American Red Cross – Millburn Short Hills Chapter

 

Jimmy Topilow and his student committee planned a record-breaking Red Cross blood drive to be held at the Millburn High School on Feb. 25.  They made appointments for 122 students to donate blood on that date.  Unfortunately, the weather didn’t co-operate.  Snow began to fall about 7 a.m. and as the drive began at 8 a.m. Dr. Miron announced that the school would be closing at 10 a.m.

 

Kristen Chusid was the first student to sign in to make a life-saving blood donation at Millburn High School on Feb. 25.

Thirty-seven students were able to give blood in the short time available.  While the units of blood donated fell short of the original goal, the units are of great value in meeting the needs of local hospitals since many scheduled drives were canceled because of the snow.

Another drive will be held at the school on Thursday April 22.  Students who donated on Feb. 25 will be eligible to donate at the April drive because 8 weeks will have elapsed between drives.  The student committee and Mrs. Josephine Savino, their faculty advisor, will be working to make sure that all of the students who wish to donate will be able to do so in April.
